Amy Beth Hopkins’ Story: Finding Relief and Getting Back to Life with HBOT

Amy Beth Hopkins | Physical Therapist

Amy Beth Hopkins came to ATX Hyperbarics with a perspective that’s both personal and professional. As a physical therapist, she understands the mechanics of pain and recovery, but she also knows how quickly an injury can take over day to day life. After a disc herniation that was pressing against her spinal cord, she tried to let her body heal naturally. Eventually, surgery became the right next step. Even then, recovery was still challenging, and the pain was enough to make normal routines feel like a question mark.

When Getting to Care is Part of the Struggle

By the time Amy started HBOT, one of the biggest hurdles wasn’t just the pain itself, it was whether she could tolerate the drive. She was coming from Lakeway to our West Lake Hills area clinic, and sitting in the car could aggravate symptoms. That’s a reality a lot of people don’t expect until they’re living it. Recovery is not only about what you do in a treatment room, it’s also about how much life you can handle outside of it.

Over the course of her sessions, that calculation started to change. Driving became less intimidating. Sitting and talking became easier. Instead of wondering if she could push through the day, she began noticing signs that her body was settling down and tolerating more.

Her Post-Surgical HBOT Protocol

Before starting, we walk through a quick intake and safety screening and confirm prescription requirements. Then we build a plan around the goal, the timeline, and what the body is trying to heal. Most sessions run about 60 to 90 minutes, where you relax in a medical-grade hyperbaric chamber and breathe 100% oxygen while the chamber is pressurized. That pressure is the key, it helps oxygen dissolve more deeply into the body’s fluids so it can reach tissue that may not be getting enough oxygen day to day.

HBOT works best when it’s consistent, because the benefits are cumulative. Many patients start by noticing changes like reduced inflammation, improved comfort, better sleep, and more capacity for normal activity. Over time, the goal is deeper healing support, improved circulation, and stronger tissue recovery. Every body is different, so we set expectations honestly, track how you respond, and adjust the plan as needed.

The Moment that Tested Her Progress

Then came the trip to Boston to help her son move into his college dorm. Before HBOT, even the drive to our clinic could flare her symptoms, so flights, long walks through airports, and a full move-in day felt unrealistic. After completing her hyperbaric oxygen therapy protocol, her pain improved enough that she could travel and be fully present for her son. She made the trip, helped with move-in, and returned home without the setback she had been bracing for.

Why the ATX Experience Mattered

Amy has run clinics and managed teams, so she notices the details. She talked about how much it helped to have a staff that stays consistent, keeps scheduling easy, and knows how to calm nerves when you walk in feeling unsure. For her, it wasn’t only about the chamber, it was the whole process, feeling supported, being taken seriously, and knowing the team is paying attention every step of the way.
